Our beautiful, thriving Michigan has one of the worst outbreaks of COVID-19 in the U.S. and the disease’s damage doesn’t stop there. But in the past four weeks, a total of 22 million have filed jobless claims — nearly wiping out all the job gains since the Great Recession.
The dramatic reversal followed a decade of spectacular growth in jobs that brought the unemployment rate to near 50-year lows but now the job market is on its knees.
In 1933 the depression had reached its depth. Roosevelt’s first inaugural address outlined in broad terms how he hoped to govern and reminded Americans that the nation’s “common difficulties” concerned “only material things.” It's as applicable today and well worth watching this minute and a half to remind ourselves that we will make it through this!
